Why should public money be used to buy Neighbours or Star Trek or produce the commercially viable EastEnders?
The BBC should be split into two. A privatised commercially financed broadcasting organisation - BBC TV and BBC Radio. And a licence fee, lottery or premium bond funded quality content publisher - BBC Productions.
BBC Productions would have a mandate to produce or commission and then sell or barter "worthy" product to all terrestrial, satellite and cable stations. All channels would be required to purchase a certain amount of BBC Productions material. This way the commercial BBC TV could maximise profits, whilst the separate BBC Productions would maximise quality but with the discipline of having to sell its product.
