Peace through Prosperity in Kashmir
Unpublished letter to The Financial Times
Sir: You quote Tony Blair: ("Kashmir
conflict 'could spiral out of control' " January 4, 2002). This 50
year problem requires more than star-dust. Perhaps some creative thinking could
help.
The de facto Kashmir line of control, effectively splits the state in half. So
why not adopt the Andorra solution of joint sovereignty? India and Pakistan
could both achieve their claims of rule over the whole of Kashmir
and claim victory.
A demilitarised Kashmir could once again become a popular summer holiday resort
and it could soon become Asia's ski destination. It could also mimic Andorra and
become the regional Islamic Banking centre. And surely Scottish Cashmere is just
as ridiculous as Kashmiri Skotch whisky or Californian Burgundy. Repatriating
the name Cashmere and variations would boost Kashmir's industry. Scottish
textile producers should rename their product
to Scotsmere or such like.
Postscript
Indian produces Shangri-La whisky in Sikkim. The Indian government accuses Europe and the US of protecting its own industry by barring Indian made "whisky" because it is made from molasses, not grain.
"India plans to cut import taxes on spirits"
