Ground share Yes - Stadium share - No

financial times Letter to the Editor, Financial Times 6th February 2007

Sir: In ("Americans agree Liverpool FC deal" Feb 6, 2007) you quote Mr David Moores: "... I have agreed to sell my shares to assist in securing the investment needed for the new stadium ... "

The subject of a ground share was discussed in ("Everton chief steps on thorny ground", Sep 28, 2004") "So far, Liverpool have been lukewarm about the idea, building on their superior success rate by developing their own stadium project, and many fans of both clubs would vehemently oppose using the same ground. But [Everton chief executive Keith] Wyness argued that it made eminent commercial sense to ground-share, as local rivals do most notably in the footballing hotbed of Milan."

But didn't Liverpool and Everton share the same ground last Saturday even though Rafa Benitez was disappointed that Everton didn't quite accept Liverpool's invitation to share Liverpool's ground. "When you play against eight players behind the ball, narrow and deep, you cannot create many clear chances." And haven't Arsenal, United and Chelsea all shared Liverpool's ground?

Perhaps a bit of creativity is required. I suggest a Liverpool / Everton ground share but no stadium share with a common playing field but two separate unconnected half-stadia. facing each other, separate car parks, roadways - the lot! That way whilst Everton's team will continue to ground share with Liverpool's but Everton's fans and directors will never enter Liverpool's stadium. And vice-versa.

Yours faithfully
Warren Edwardes, chief executive
