executive officer at Delphi Risk Management, a London-based risk advisor with

at Delphi Risk Management noted that this reduction in Islamic banks' focus on
U.S. markets may prove damaging to the dollar over the longer term, in addition
to its obvious short term impact. "Movement away from the U.S. is also on
the back of a desire to diversify - as the vast majority of Islamic funds are

<Islamic interbank money market> is an exciting development
which has been eagerly awaited." says Warren Edwardes,
ceo of London financial product innovation and risk management
consultancy, Delphi Risk Management. He
continues "Islamic Banking has sufferred from being predominately
bilateral in nature. This money market will create a multilateral
banking system, inject a strong dose of much needed liquidity
and lead to the development of sound Islamic bank treasury and
asset/liability management" . He commented on the need
for innovation: "Given the potential size of the Islamic
banking market, I am surprised that more banks do not direct their
creative energies towards this sector. There are many opportunities
for banks prepared to innovate to satisfy their customers' unfulfilled
needs based on Sharia law. "

May 2000 issue of Planned Savings Magazine."There
are about 1.2 million Muslims in the UK and a total of about 6
million in Western Europe. They represent an increasingly prosperous
segment of the market, many of them working in the new economy
IT sector . It is surprising that they have not been cultivated
by the mainstream UK banks."
says Warren Edwardes, CEO of Delphi Risk Management, the London-based
innovation and risk management consultancy.
Delphi is currently advising a major
UK bank on the provision of retail Islamic savings products.
"The Islamic banks operating in the UK are either relatively
small or focus solely on the high net worth sector. My experience
of the market in South Africa confirmed my view that whilst Muslims
are very keen to place their savings according to Islamic principles,
they would rather save with the major banks. A major UK bank or
building society that provides such products would be pushing
at an open door and would soon capture the lion's share of a grateful
and loyal consumer base."
