Sir: ("Football games without frontiers" June 10/11, 2000) pointed out that only 5 of the German squad play abroad. Such statistics indicated that Portugal and Romania would go through from Group A to meet Group D's France, Czech or Holland.
In Euro 2000, the Czech Republic had 13 players playing league football abroad, France has 14, Netherlands has 17 and Portugal and Romania have 12.
There is much discussion on the number of foreign football players playing in England. The statistical evidence proves that the problem is the opposite. More English footballers should play football abroad.
Examining the entire 22-man squads for World Cup 1998, France and Brazil both had 13 foreign-based players whilst losing semi-finalists Netherlands and Croatia both had 12.
Under-achieving England and Spain had no overseas based players. Nigeria with all 22 men playing abroad and Paraguay and Yugoslavia both with 19 abroad showed early promise but evidently had far too many players abroad.
The losing quarter-finalists had either too few or too many foreign-based players in the squad for a winning balance. Argentina and Denmark both had 16 whilst Italy had 3 and Germany 4 playing abroad.
But having about a dozen players playing abroad may be necessary but in itself insufficient. Scotland and Austria both had 10 men playing in foreign leagues but 8 and 6 of those played in culturally similar England and Germany respectively. Colombia started with the requisite 13 foreign-based players but Aspirilla's sending home resulted in internal strife and the Czech Republic found themselves in a strong Euro 2000 group with similarly balanced teams.
Many a unit trust has been sold on flimsier statistics.
